Firewall Rules Review

Firewall Rules Review · Rulebase & configuration audit

Every rule earns its place, or it goes.

We review your firewall rule by rule, test each one against the business need behind it and against vendor best practice, then hand you a precise list of what to tighten, merge or remove, and how to do it.

Why review your rules

Rulebases grow. Risk grows with them.

Close forgotten openings

Temporary access for a project or a vendor often outlives its purpose. We find the rules nobody owns and the ports nobody needs.

Cut complexity, not cover

Shadowed, duplicated and overlapping rules slow every change and hide mistakes. A cleaner rulebase is easier to audit and safer to change.

Evidence for your auditors

Standards such as PCI-DSS expect firewall rules to be reviewed and justified. Our report shows the review took place and what it found.

How we deliver

Six steps. No rule left unexplained.

We work from read-only access and configuration exports, so the review itself does not change settings on your production firewalls.

Scope and access

We agree which firewalls are in scope and obtain read-only access or configuration exports, plus network diagrams if you have them.

Business context

We meet the people who own the network and applications to learn why key rules exist and which traffic each one must allow.

Rule-by-rule analysis

Each rule is checked for over-broad sources, destinations or services, shadowing, duplication, missing logging and stale objects.

Platform configuration

We review the firewall itself: administrative access, management interfaces, logging, software version and hardening settings.

Best-practice benchmark

Findings are compared with firewall security benchmarks, vendor guidance, hardening guidelines and our own field experience.

Report and handover

You receive the detailed report, and we take your team through the recommended changes so they can be planned safely.

What we cover

Rulebase analysis, firewall configuration and what you receive.

Expected outcomes: a leaner rulebase that is easier to audit, fewer unnecessary openings, and documented evidence of review for auditors.

FAQ

Firewall reviews, before you start.

What network and security teams ask before a firewall rules review.

Will the review disrupt our network traffic?

No. We work from read-only access or configuration exports and do not change rules ourselves. Every recommended change stays with your team to schedule through your normal change process.

Which firewalls can you review?

We review the firewall platforms organisations run at the perimeter and between internal zones. Tell us the vendors and versions in scope and we will confirm coverage and approach in the proposal.

What access and input do you need from our team?

Read-only access or a configuration export for each firewall, any network diagrams, and time with the people who can explain why key rules exist. Rule descriptions and change records help a great deal.

How are the findings reported?

In one detailed report: every misconfigured rule with the change we recommend, and every weakness in the firewall's own configuration with its remediation, written so engineers can act on it directly.

Does this help with PCI-DSS or regulatory audits?

Yes. Many frameworks, PCI-DSS among them, expect firewall rules to be reviewed and justified. The report gives auditors evidence that an independent review took place and what it found.
